Why careful planning is essential before choosing a career
Planning is a trait which can turn a normal task into a grand activity and its absence can make a significant pursuit chaotic. Career, being a lifelong journey requiring serious and careful planning.
In the modern world, the pursuit of knowledge has changed and transformed in such a way that students consider it as one of the many stages of a single process. Many of them do not understand the fact that higher education and career planning are quite separate and important aspects of education, which can determine their future and success.
With the educational world becoming larger and wider with every passing day and the emergence of news fields and streams in it, choosing and planning for a career has never been more complex and tricky. While the emergence of new courses has resulted in a wider range of career opportunities, it has also been witnessed that unless students receive guidance, they tend to make wrong career choices, which haunt them for the rest of their lives. Therefore, the need for careful career planning is key.
The process of planning a career can be broadly divided into three stages: the initial stage, the development stage and the execution stage.
The Initial Stage:
Owing to students’ confusion and the possibility of making wrong decisions, educators around the world have introduced career counselling as an effective measure and an important tool to ensure that students make the correct career choices.
Career counselling helps students in not only identifying their areas of interests but also helps them set goals and plan ahead as to what pathway they will follow to pursue their careers. As a student, you will surely have something, which interests you. It may be a hobby, a course subject or any other productive activity, career counsellors will help you sift through your interests and will aid you in identifying those interests on which you can form a firm basis of career. The reason why you need to have professional career counsellors to guide you is: they possess more knowledge about the various careers, which may suit your personality as well as your aptitude. Furthermore, they will be able to give you deep insights about each career and profession and will help you in fine tuning your interests to the career that suits you best.
The Development Stage:
With a firm plan about which career you will pursue, you will find it easier to plan what path you need to take for higher education. This includes determining what course or courses, you need to pursue, which institutes offer them, what expenses you may incur while studying in them and whether there are any obstacles, which might hinder your pursuit. In this stage, you should carefully analyse all possible aspects; whether they are challenges or not, and consider what implications they might have on your plans.
The Execution Stage:
The last stage of planning is when you initiate it. Once you have planned all aspects of higher education and have considered all implications, you will have to begin putting your plan into action. This includes applying for scholarships if you need them, contacting the admission officers of the college(s) or university where you want to study and preparing yourself for the requirements such as entrance tests etc.
The lack of financial resources shouldn’t be a hindrance as there are numerous scholarships for students who are willing to pursue higher education, provided they apply for them on time with the required documents. You should also be serious in the other official requirements, such as writing an effective statement of purpose (essay) and scoring well in entrance exams, because these things will portray what kind of a student you are and where you want to study.
