A Guide for International Students Moving to Leeds
Every year, thousands of students come to study in Leeds from overseas. In fact, 4,500 overseas students come to Leeds University alone.
To accommodate its international students every September, both Leeds Beckett and Leeds Uni assign an international welcome team to run a meet-and-greet service. This means that someone will be there to meet you at the airport or train station, and give you all the info you need to settle in and make the most of your time on your year abroad.
Before the start of term in September, you’ll be invited to attend the International Welcome Week; a free programme of social events and information meetings. This is designed as an introduction to the great city of Leeds and includes workshops and city tours.
Both Leeds University and Leeds Beckett guarantee accommodation to all of its first year students, as long as they meet all of the relevant application deadlines. Leeds University has around 8,000 bed spaces.
Both universities offer a choice of locations and types of accommodation. Rents include all utility charges and contents insurance. You also get 24 hour internet access at no extra cost.
Scholarships and bursaries
The University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett offer a range of bursaries and scholarships to international students. Some of these are offered by the academic schools and others apply to all international students.
If you don’t have enough room for all of your possessions when you go to uni, or when you go back home during the summer, you can choose to rent a space at one of the many secure storage providers in the city.
You will first need to decide on how much space you actually require (many companies offer storage calculators) and then it’s just a case of finding the best price relative to how long you need the unit for. If you’re enrolled as a student, and have an ID card, larger companies like McCarthy’s self storage on Meanwood road offer student discounts like 4 weeks free, whereas others may offer reduced rates depending how long you are planning to use the unit so be sure to enquire before you sign any paperwork.
Modern self-storage units are dry, easily accessible and secure. Most storage firms offer flexible hire periods and some even offer student discounts. These firms generally put a few sensible restrictions in place that on what you can store. But for the most part, it’s pretty easy to keep those all-important boxes of “stuff” safely behind when you head off for the summer, as long as you’re not hoarding live animals or dead bodies!
Having the right support available and knowing where to find it can help you enjoy your time in Leeds and to make sure it’s successful.
The International Student Office (called the International Student Advice Centre at Becketts) provides information, guidance and advice on a large number of issues. These include everything from immigration and extending visas, to living in the city and settling in.
