Health and Care paid internship in London

Hello, we’re Kaleidoscope. A social enterprise using our earnings to further our mission: to work with others in health and care to create a future which is connected, kind and joyful.

35 - 40 hours per week
£19,201 Per Year

What are you going to do:

We're very excited to be launching The Perspectives Programme, a 9 month internship placement for people at the start of their career in the health world. We're looking for two interns to join our team.

The programme is designed to discover new and creative ways to tackle how to promote unheard voices in the context of health and care.

Although we are big fans of a cup of tea at Kaleidoscope, we don't want interns who are glorified tea makers (although in fairness, cups of tea are probably a key part of all of our roles).

This internship is about making a real difference, so alongside supporting client delivery, interns will be supported to design and lead on their own project to improve the way unheard voices are heard in healthcare.

The programme is open to all applicants, no matter their background or experience provided they have a passion for improving health and care, and a plan for promoting unheard voices and celebrating diversity.

For the first round of recruitment we just want to know about a project that candidates think we should invest in.  We want you to reflect on your experience or that of family or friends, and pitch us a project (which will take approx 1 day per week over 9 months to deliver) that promotes a way in which health and healthcare can hear from unheard voices. We've done lots of different and wonderful stuff so anything is possible (well, almost!) as long as it addresses the way unheard voices are heard in health care.

For the duration of the internship we will support you to spend approximately 20% of your time (1 day a week over a 9 month period) developing and delivering a project to promote unheard voices in healthcare. What this project will look like is up to you - telling the stories of a marginalised group, a project to hear lived experiences in policymaking, or something completely different!

But (and this is important) as well as offering you a chance to design and deliver your own programme we will also give you real experience of consultancy and the health and policy sector.  From the outset we will expect you to work as part of Kaleidoscope supporting client delivery and leading pieces of your own work - all done with the overt aim of building your skills and confidence in the workplace.

We do "traditional consultancy" through advising health and care organisations on their strategy, we support networks and partnerships, we design and facilitate a whole host of face-to-face and digital events and we work with clients across the public, private and voluntary sectors. But we also like to play with ideas that help our mission, even if it costs us money to do it.  We're going to keep thinking up new ideas and seeing which work wonderfully, which flop fantastically, and which should never be touched by anyone, ever again.

We're proud of what we're doing at Kaleidoscope, and we want to share this with as many people as possible. Diversity of thought and experience is incredibly important and if we want to continue to grow as an organisation that produces fresh and creative ideas, we need to support a variety of voices and perspectives to be a part of Kaleidoscope.

We are not able to sponsor any visas at this point, so all applicants must be eligible to work in the UK and over 18 years of age.

What we offer:

  • Real work experience as part of a programme team delivering client contracts
  • 9 month placement paid at London Living Wage
  • Opportunity to deliver your own project from design to implementation
  • Flexible working with options to work from home/remote work
  • Exposure to a diverse range of events in health, social care & policy
  • A mentor
  • Optional short placements
  • Visits within our network of organisations and partners
  • Free lunches every day
  • Table tennis matches on the office balcony

What we ask:

  • No minimum education required but candidates must be literate, numerate and comfortable using a computer to produce documents
  • We don’t want this to be an internship advertised for ‘early career starters’ where you also need a Masters degree, 3 years of work experience and a knighthood to apply. Because to be honest, in most cases it’s probably not necessary.
  • Committed to diversity. Able to draw on personal lived experience to promote diversity in health and/or at Kaleidoscope
  • A passion for improving health and care, who wants to promote unheard voices and celebrate diversity
  • A keen interest in the health and care world. No formal expertise required - just lots of enthusiasm and interest in our work
  • Organisational brilliance. From experience of running projects to organising a huge birthday bash for your Mum's fiftieth; we're looking for someone who can juggle a lot while having an eye for detail.
  • A flexible and proactive attitude. Thumb twiddlers need not apply. And while office yoga is not (yet) mandatory, you will have to be happy taking responsibility for a range of different tasks with an ability to adapt quickly.
  • Tech savvy. You don't need to be a complete IT whizz, but a bit of tech skill combined with creativity won't go amiss.
  • Resilience. Kaleidoscope is no fairy-tale; and as a start-up without a genie propping us up with stacks of gold, we've no right to exist. Tolerance of ambiguity is key here.
  • A bucket load of charm. You know how to talk to all-sorts, and like doing so too. You'll also understand what it takes to work well in a team (please note, we accept gifts of biscuits all days of the week but prefer cake on Fridays).

Application Process

Round one: Project Pitch (closing date: 9am Monday 24th June 2019)

As part of the Perspectives Programme we will support you to spend a day a week of your 9 month placement to develop and deliver a project which will improve how unheard voices are heard more clearly in the context of healthcare.

Reflecting on your experience or that of your family or friends, pitch us a project (which will take approx 1 day per week over 9 months to deliver) which promotes a way in which health and health care can hear from unheard voices.

We will assess your project proposal using 3 criteria;

  • Rationale for idea/imagination shown in the idea itself
  • Project approach (how you would do it)
  • Outcomes/creating change (what would change as a result?)

Please outline your proposal, of no more than 2 A4 pages and submit it as the "Motivation Letter" on your application. Only include your initials and mobile number as identifiers on the proposal (put these on both pages).

Have questions? Have a look at our website here or email us (with "Intern Application" as the subject) if you have specific queries we can help with.

Thank you! We hope to hear from you.
