Research assistant in London Borough of Richmond upon Thames

A research assistant is needed to transcribe letters held at the National Archives written between the British Minister in China and Japan and the Foreign Office between 1859 and 1870.

9 - 10 hours per week
Between £9.00 and £10.00 Per Hour

What are you going to do:

I'm working on a biography of Sir Rutherford Alcock, British Minister in China and Japan.  I live in Japan, and I need someone to transcribe letters he received and sent. I estimate that these letters will take about 100 hours to transcribe, and I'll pay £1,000 for that work.  The transcribing can be done at the National Archives in Kew, or you can photograph them and work on them anywhere.  I'd like you to do them bit by bit and I'll pay you as you go along.

What we offer:

  • Work whenever you want
  • We'll work out a timetable together to keep it stress-free for you.
  • Working with interesting material if you're interested in diplomatic history and/or China and Japan.

What we ask:

  • At least finished high school
  • The ability to work out the meaning of unclear texts
  • Experience reading 19th century handwriting
  • A native speaker of English
  • Ideally a PhD student who is working in a related field
