Equity Derivatives Legal Counsel in London

Job description


The purpose of this role is to provide legal support for the Equity Derivatives business across a range of products. In addition, to support the Markets legal team more generally in connection with the execution of the strategic priorities of the function and the firm including by involvement in regulatory projects



• Transactional support: The majority of the work will involve providing support to Equity Derivative transactions including advising on, and drafting documentation for, both flow and complex structured deals.
• Commoditisation: Transactional support will include advocating, developing and implementing standard forms and templates.
• Regulatory Change: In addition to transaction support, the role will include advising on and helping to implement regulatory change projects as well as programmes to enable the strategic development of the business area.
• Counsel: Management of external counsel including responsibility for legal spend is a key accountability
• Knowledge management: The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering updates on relevant legal, regulatory and governance matters to senior management and colleagues within both Legal and the front office; fostering collaboration with other legal teams both within Markets and more broadly to ensure sharing of knowhow and efficient legal coverage
• Strategic Partner: The role will involve acting as strategic partner and advisor to the Equities business as well as other business and infrastructure partners on the legal, regulatory, and reputational impact of regulatory change and implementation.
• The role will involve interacting with a wide range of desks in Equities as well as stakeholders across Legal and Compliance, on legal, regulatory and governance issues.
• The candidate must be a strong communicator, capable of explaining legal requirements, interpretation and developments clearly and interacting with stakeholders with gravitas. 



• Qualified lawyer with experience of equities transactions or a derivatives background gained in either private practice or in-house.
• The candidate must have knowledge and experience of developing solutions to legal problems.
• Identifies legal and commercial risks within the framework of the firm’s governance and risk policies, knows when to escalate and integrates with other core risk functions.
• Takes ownership and sees matters to completion through effective prioritisation and a commitment to teamwork.



• Understands commercial rationale and client needs and supports the business in formulating and executing strategy.
• Uses creative and innovative thinking to structure appropriate and sustainable solutions to transactional and regulatory challenges.
• Committed to continuous teaching and learning and shares knowledge proactively.
• Knowledge and experience of Financial Services Regulation would be beneficial.
