Personal assistant in Saint Ives

We are recruiting a personal assistant to work along side a 14-year-old young lady who has a range of physical disabilities, which limits her independence.

37 - 38 hours per week

What are you going to do:

The priority for this role is to facilitate effective communication with the client who is non-verbal. The client is a wheelchair user and is student in a mainstream school.

You will be using multiple ways to help promote successful interactions (training is available and a willingness to learn is essential).

With this in mind you will:

  • Empower the client to express her needs and wishes.
  • You will work with the client to enable her needs and wishes to be met.
  • You will provide a person centered approach to enable the client to undertake activities such as assisting with personal hygiene, toileting, feeding dressing, shopping.
  • You will assist with home-based academic projects, to enable the client to work towards her GCSE.
  • You will with enable the client to access social opportunities and mix with a friendship group.
  • Activities include intimate personal care and therefore a female support worker is required.
  • Previous experience of working with young people with a high level of care needs is desirable but not essential, as full training will be provided.

Responsibilites:

  • Building up relationships with client in order to gain an awareness of their practical, communication, and social needs
  • Working with the client and other professionals to develop a support plan for the client
  • Aiding the client with daily personal care such as washing, dressing and feeding themselves
  • Organising and supporting clients during recreational activities.
  • Escorting clients to a destination (e.g. school, medical appointments or the shops). This may be as the driver of a wheelchair accessible vehicle or an escort in appropriate transport.

What we offer:

  • Hours of work to be discussed in more detail at interview, however flexibility will be required.
  • £12.50 per hour
  • Hours of work 37.5 per week.
  • Possibility of 2 part time posts.

What we ask:

  • No minimum education required
  • A willingness to demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to AAC.
  • Good Communication skills
  • Ability to work individually and within a team environment
  • NVQ Level 3 or 4 (or equivalent) in Health or Social Care, children or LDA
  • Able to demonstrate the necessary skills and competencies for the care for clients with disabilities.
  • A good knowledge of basic health care and hygiene standards.
  • Able to demonstrate effective communication skills (written, non verbal and verbal)
  • Able to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with their professional status in accordance with the code of conduct
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to manage difficult situations
  • Self motivated, ability to act on own initiative within the restrictions of their role.
