Hostel Support Worker in Birmingham

To provide an efficient, responsive, sensitive and holistic support service for vulnerable residents. To work with residents to encourage independence and maximise potential.

12 - 16 hours per week
Between £9.00 and £10.00 Per Hour

What are you going to do:

Key Tasks

  • To assist and support residents in all key areas (e.g. health, leisure, budgeting, personal safety, community involvement, life skills, training, education and employment) with the aim of increasing their independence.
  • Support residents to access, and engage with, community services.
  • To manage caseloads effectively.
  • To produce, in discussion with residents, a personalised needs assessment, risk assessment/management plan and support plan.
  • To immediately record all support sessions on the approved paperwork.
  • To ensure that appropriate, accurate and up to date records are kept in respect of the residents, including support notes and contact sheets.
  • To monitor and review risk management and support plans on a quarterly basis making recommendations as appropriate.
  • To alert the Line Manager to potentially serious residents issues including Safeguarding alerts, complaints and incidents.
  • To assist residents to fulfil their responsibilities within the licence agreement, as far as possible by advising/liaising with the landlord, ensuring that the resident’s dignity is respected.
  • To facilitate the participation of residents in decision making about themselves and the running of their home including facilitating regular Residents Meetings.
  • To assist residents to prepare for independent living through the implementation of the Tenancy Ready Programme.
  • To comply at all times with the organisation’s Code of Conduct together with its policies and procedures with regard to the maintenance of a professional relationship between staff and residents.
  • To liaise with external agencies regarding residents’ welfare e.g. Housing Benefits, Social Care & Health professionals, Probation Service etc. Ensuring that documentation is completed accurately, in full and in a timely manner.
  • To work as part of a team and respond to emergencies as necessary.
  • To comply with Consult and Solve’s Health & Safety procedures; to support the Management Team in the promotion of a safety culture which is understood and adopted by both staff and residents.

General Duties :

  • To attend supervision with the Housing and Support Manager on a regular basis.
  • To work flexibly as directed by the Management Team, including some evening work as necessary.
  • To attend Team Meetings, Case Reviews and other meetings as necessary and directed.
  • To ensure that confidentiality of information is maintained at all times in line with the organisation’s Data Protection and Security of Information policy and procedures.
  • To prepare reports for managers as necessary and as directed.
  • To maintain an awareness of current instructions circulated at staff meetings, via the Management Team or via written information from your Line Manager.
  • To work within a framework of equality of opportunity.
  • Arrange and participate in internal and external training as appropriate.
  • Take such steps as are necessary and practical to ensure the Health & Safety of him/herself and others affected by his/her work.
  • Any other duties that may be required within the post-holder’s capability including temporary cover during staff leave or sickness.

Special Instructions

  • The post-holder must be able to work on their on initiative, as this post is self-administering and requires lone working.
  • The post-holder is required to travel to properties across Birmingham and so must hold a valid driving license and have access to a suitable vehicle. Or be willing to travel to different properties using public transport.
  • Polish speaking candidates would be advantageous as we have a number of Polish residents requiring Support

Communications and Working Relationships

  • Externally : appropriate agencies, including referral agencies, registered social landlords, probation service, social care and health professionals, specialist support providers.
  • Internally : Management Team, members of staff and clients.
