About The Role

We have an opportunity for an experienced Data Scientist to work within our newly created Data Science team. This is a unique opportunity for a Data Scientist, with proven “hands on” experience in building algorithms that generate demonstrable ROI, to take their career to the next level by leading people and projects.  


The Morrisons Data Science group is responsible for building bespoke mathematical models and algorithms to provide valuable insight and predictive analytics to our senior stakeholder group. The work focuses on business performance, bringing insights to drive efficiencies and improve profitability.  


The Senior Manager: Insight & Performance will champion the use of data science for decision making and ensure we are truly engaged with our stakeholders.  The role will be supported by our Head of Data Science to further develop your skills as a Data Scientist whilst helping us to scale production ready data science that delivers significant ROI for a FTSE 100 company.


What this role will be doing…

In our Data Science role, you will lead a small team of Data Scientists and will be responsible for the effective delivery of specific projects to optimise business performance.. You will have the communication ability to present complex information to technical and non-technical audiences in an accessible and concise way, providing clear recommendations that will optimise performance.  You will also have a clear understanding of how a retail business operates and the opportunities to influence growth and drive efficiency.  Other responsibilities will include:


  •    Working as a team to find patterns in large data sets, including the build of bespoke models which answer specific questions posed by stakeholders

  • Lead the development of production ready Python code that enables us to deploy algorithms for use by colleagues and other Morrisons systems

  • Mentor junior members of the team, both in terms of technical development and their softer business skills

  • Work closely with data analysts in our reporting teams, to ensure they have the access to the right “models” to answer their questions and support and guidance on when models should be used     

  • Engaging with cross-functional teams to understand key business requirements      

  • Meeting with a variety of stakeholders to discuss data project requirements and taking action from these conversations    

  •    Being an advocate and champion for data science, talking about the tools we have available

  • Creating actionable recommendations from findings and communicating this in a compelling way that is customer-friendly and easy to follow.


About You

About you…

So that you are set for success, we are looking for an ambitious individual with excellent communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels. You will work as part of a versatile team who are committed to providing an outstanding service so it's important that you lead by example. You will be a hands-on Data Scientist, looking for further management responsibility, committed to building the function's capacity for the future. You will also have:


  •    Extensive data science experience using Python or R; however, be aware that we use Python day to day and this is our language of choice

  • Working understanding of Devops and/or Data Engineering principles     

  • Statistical modelling, data mining hands-on experience, including the ability to explain how methods work to a range of stakeholders

  •    Knowledge of Machine Learning Techniques and evidence of amending existing frameworks to suit the exact nature of the task at hand  

  • Proven track record in data science with evident experience in a commercial environment (within retail, digital, marketing or e-commerce)  

  • Demonstrable experience of utilising data science techniques / predictive analytics to drive better decisions within a large business that contribute to sustainable growth

  • A passion for data and the impact it can have 

  • A desire to become a “hands on” leader in Data Science - taking responsibility for managing people and projects  

  •    An excellent and engaging communicator at all levels
