Introduction

As a Speech and Language Therapist at The Spinney you will be helping some change the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in society, helping them to build a brighter future

Working part-time (22.5 hours per week) as part of the therapy team you will provide specialist SALT assessments and treatments to men with mental health conditions and/or personality disorders within the purpose-built medium/low secure environment.

Working alongside a multidisciplinary team, you will lead group sessions to develop and improve their speech through assessments and interventions. You will build one-to-one rapport with service users, encouraging their engagement and empowering their journey to recovery.

Job Role: Part-Time Speech and Language Therapist 

Location: Atherton, Greater Manchester M46 9NT

Salary: £38,000 - £40,000 Pro Rota

Hours: 22.5, Part-Time

Your responsibilities

  • To demonstrate specialist skills in dealing with complex cases, cultural and linguistic differences, and to generate appropriate strategies for caseload management. 
  • To be involved in undertaking audit and contributing to research in the provision of treatments.
  • To provide specialist assessment, differential diagnosis and appropriate, clearly planned SLT intervention and discharge planning for people with a wide range of disorders within the service, in line with empirical research and RCSLT Clinical Guidelines.
  • To demonstrate specialist knowledge in the areas of acquired communication and swallowing disorders underpinned by current evidence-based practice. 
  • To adapt assessment and intervention techniques to the needs of the individual people, including the use of augmentative and alternative communication systems.
  • To contribute to the assessment and information-gathering regarding service users’ mental capacity and ability to give informed consent with support from senior colleagues, and to assist service user's to maximise their independence in decision-making and communicating their wishes. 
  • To work closely with all appropriate agencies and multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure comprehensive management of service users’ SLT needs, providing written and verbal reports as appropriate, enabling all parties involved to fully understand the nature of the service user's communication and swallowing disorders. 

To be successful in this role, you'll need

  • To have experience of managing a caseload involving assessment and treatment of dysphagia
  • Experience of working with families

Where you will be working

Location: Everest Road, Atherton, Manchester, M46 9NT

You will be working at The Spinney, a service which offers a range of care settings for male patients with personality disorder and/or mental illness. The purpose-built medium, low secure and rehabilitation wards, as well as a psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) are all set within an 11 acre site with extensive woodland and landscaped areas.

You will be working alongside a multidisciplinary team at The Spinney who have previously been recognised by the Association of Psychological Therapies (APT) for their ability to reinforce positive behaviour, prevention of challenging behaviour and successful interventions in a secure care setting.
