Elderly Medicine Staff Nurses: BAND 5

University College Hospital in London is looking for enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 nurses to work in our inpatient elderly medicine service.

Do you have a passion to work in this exciting specialty? Would you like to work in an environment that is designed to meet the needs of older people? Come and join a great team of staff who pride themselves in the care they provide to this vulnerable patient group.

Speciality information: We have 3 elderly medicine wards here at UCLH. Our wards are seen as the experts in providing top quality care to older people here at UCLH. We have had many exciting initiatives come to fruition over the last 2 years including making all the ward environments “Dementia Friendly” and the launch of our Reminiscence room at the main site. We also provide activities on both sites for our patients including arts and crafts, pet therapy and interactive music sessions.

T7 ward at UCH consists of 38 beds (21 female and 17 male). T10 Ward has 14 beds and flexes to male and female as required. These wards care for acutely ill older adults. Many of these patients will have a diagnosis of dementia along with complex medical problems and long term condition management. Our patients are very dependent and rely on us to provide them with the highest standards of care to prevent such patient harms as pressure ulcers and falls.

Evergreen Ward is a 17 bedded ward which caters for patients who no longer need a bed on the acute ward but still have needs around their discharge destination, complex care needs or further therapy input. These patients are vulnerable to hospital acquired harms and we pride ourselves on providing the highest standards of care to prevent these. The ward has a dining area and living room area and is able to offer patients the chance to rehabilitate in an environment that is a step closer to their discharge destination.

All three wards offer full orientation and development for staff. There are opportunities for staff to pursue academic courses at university.

This is an exciting time to be part of this great team. The expectation is that staff will rotate between all 3 areas to enhance and consolidate their learning and knowledge of the patient journey.

We are looking for committed and dynamic nurses with excellent communication skills and above all a real desire and passion to work with older people. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your skills and learn about a wide variety of medical problems including diabetes, renal, cardiac and respiratory. We offer training in IV therapy, cannulation, phlebotomy and male catheterisation with the addition of advanced delirium and dementia training and enhanced discharge planning skills. We have a dedicated Clinical Practice Facilitator to support you with your learning.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about medical and elderly nursing within both acute and convalescing environments, about delivering high standards and ensuring that our patients have a good experience whilst under our care. Newly qualified and nurses from non-acute backgrounds are welcome to apply.

This is an excellent opportunity to develop your skills as a professional nurse in a friendly and forward-thinking environment.
