The Civic Scholars Award

We are delighted to introduce the inaugural Civic Scholars Award, which is now open for applications. Kicking off this year, we will be offering eight doctoral students in the UK each year a unique opportunity to connect their studies to our work and deepen their understanding of how to work in and with communities.

1 - 35 hours per week
Between £-1.00 and £500.00 Per Hour

What are you going to do:

What are the benefits for a Civic Scholar?

  • The opportunity to connect their research interests directly with our work and network with senior figures through our programmes, networks and collaborations
  • The chance to explore and communicate how their research can have stronger community impact through our series of seminars and events
  • Mentoring from either a senior member of The Young Foundation team or a volunteer mentor from another civil society or public sector organisation within our partner network
  • An opportunity to receive best-practice training through our national peer research network
  • The chance to participate in a range of activities, which cover all domains of the Researcher Development Framework
  • A bursary of £500 to support training or development activities, agreed with their mentor.

What will a Civic Scholar do?

  • Be an active part of our collaborative ongoing enquiry into community engagement to explore the future of civil society
  • Contribute to a minimum of two of our events over the 18-month period
  • Co-author at least one paper with our team, on an area of shared interest and expertise
  • Be an ambassador for the Institute for Community Studies; helping to raise awareness about our work both within academia and their own wider local community.
