Student Software Engineer (12 month placement)

4 - 40 hours per week

Job description

We are recruiting placement students to join us for one year starting in summer 2021.

Consult Red is a trusted partner to the digital media industry and beyond, driving innovation and delivering support through the entire product development journey.

We apply our cutting-edge experience in product development, hardware, embedded and cloud technology to help companies in all sectors to deliver connected devices and systems.

Founded in 2003, Consult Red has grown a strong reputation working with some of the world's leading subscription TV and media operators. We've grown from being an embedded specialist in the media sector to a provider working with companies in other industries such as Energy and Healthcare. We've applied our cutting-edge experience and talent in product development, hardware, embedded and cloud technology to help customers deliver connected devices and systems.

As the world becomes more and more connected, it's this experience that we think will drive opportunities for our clients looking to broaden their appeal and their business in the next decade.

We work with clients as a secure, discreet and reliable partner who works hard in the background, making sure everything is done on time. Our teams are based in and around our three offices in Yorkshire in the UK, Wroclaw in Poland and Los Angeles in the USA.

COVID-19-related changes

Due to COVID-19, our staff are currently working from home and therefore the interviews for this role will take place online.

The placement student role is normally based in our Shipley, West Yorkshire, UK office (close to Leeds and Bradford), and we hope that by the time you start with us in summer 2021 you will be able to join us in the office. Depending on the situation nearer the time, some amount of home working may be required.

In Brief:

You'll join us on an initial 12-month placement and, after getting up to speed working on internal projects, you'll become part of an Agile development team; working in a fast-paced, customer-facing software development role. This will give you a great grounding in embedded software design, as well as commercial experience of C++ and Java, and exposure to technologies such as Android.

This role will challenge you and push you out of your comfort zone, so we're looking for bright, able students with sound theoretical knowledge, an ability to learn “on the job”, and excellent inter-personal skills.

Most of all, we're looking for people that are passionate about embedded technology and who want to expand their horizons in an exciting and fast-moving area of the technology industry.

Successful applicants are likely to be covering the following areas during their degree studies:

  • Computer architecture
  • Software engineering
  • Object oriented design
  • Programming in a range of languages, ideally including one or more of C, C++ and Java
  • Experience using software development tools including IDEs (for example, Eclipse), version control systems (for example, Git, Mercurial or Subversion), compilers and debuggers
  • Familiarity with Linux operating systems and common command line tools

Applicants Must:

  • Be studying for an undergraduate honours degree in Computer Science, Computer Systems Engineering or a similar subject
  • Have completed at least two years of study by summer 2021
  • Have excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken)
  • Have excellent problem-solving skills

Our Recruitment Process:

Once you submit your CV, we'll send you a short online form asking you to confirm a couple of details. This will then go directly to our team to review.

If your background looks like a good match, we'll ask you to do short technical test and, providing that goes well, we'll want to meet you for an online interview, to find out more about your knowledge, your experience and what makes you tick.

Please click apply to register your interest and to find out more. We'll be in touch really soon.
