The Senior Data Engineer will be a key member of a cross-functional squad. The role will require you to:

 

  • Design and deliver functional, high quality software independently
  • Collaborate and contribute to the various features being built as part of the product roadmap in a team
  • Break large problems into sub-tasks and take operational responsibility
  • Continuously iterate and improve on the platforms/products/features being built working with product managers and with the other engineers, BI Analysts and Data Scientists
  • Write tests, contribute to test frameworks, review and approve code changes
  • Mentor new hires, champion processes and set standards for fellow data engineering team members
  • Analyse, isolate and fix of discrepancies between datasets
  • Improve the quality of existing datasets and ensure the high quality of new datasets
  • Improve data processing throughput both incrementally and radically
  • Work equally with data from legacy systems and data from modern eventing systems
  • Develop and enhance ELT pipelines including simplifying configuration and orchestration
  • Ensure data pipelines are monitored for functional correctness, SLIs and anomalies
  • Bring new ideas and technical choices into the team
  • Promote evidence-based decision making
  • Work to clarify ambiguous or incomplete requirements
  • Own solutions through to completion once agreed on
  • Course correct as required
  • Collaborate in team activities: Code review, standards setting, retrospectives, continuous improvements, Show'n'Tells, backlog refinement
  • Be proactive in your development and growth
  • Take no blame root cause analysis and incidence management approach of all issues
  • Be a role model for behaviour in accordance with company culture, with a strong work ethic and accountability
  • Collaborate across squads where there are dependencies
  • Embrace a DevOps culture and sense of ownership of what you build

The Person

Technical Skills

We are not looking for a perfect match. A strong engineering outlook goes a look way. If you have worked with similar technologies, we are happy for you to transfer your skills into a new technical landscape. For example, a GCP background is a good indicator you could switch to AWS and ramp up your skills effectively.

 

With regards to your technical expertise, you must be able to demonstrate:

 

  • An interest in functional programming
  • Professional experience in a comparable role
  • Experience in building reliable, scalable, monitored and maintainable systems and platforms
  • Ability to solve problems and think across different scales from the strategic right down to the code optimization and debugging level
  • Ability to separate essential complexity from incidental complexity and a desire to reduce complexity
  • Experience with Cloud Computing: AWS, S3, Athena, Glue, Lambda, CloudFormation, EMR, Delta.io
  • Familiarity with containerization: Kubernetes, Docker, Docker Compose
  • Experience with distributed computing: Spark and architectural principles
  • Experience with messaging: Kafka, Avro schema, Kafka Connector, Kafka ecosystem
  • Experience with monitoring: Datadog
  • Experience with orchestration: Airflow
  • Experience with DevOps concepts & working with CI and CD
  • Software Engineering Practices: TDD, Integration Testing, Design
  • Strong Development background in one or more of the following: Scala, Java, Kotlin, Python. All Spark jobs are written in Scala.
  • SQL Scripting: Athena, Spark SQL, DBT
  • RDBMS: Oracle, Postgres
  • Familiarity with Git, Code Review, Code Coverage, SBT, IDE
  • Agile/scrum/Kanban development experience. Embraces Agile and encourages other to embrace an agile way of working
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills within distributed project teams.
  • Nice to have: Experience working with a Cloud Native Data Warehousing

We offer a flexible, home-based working model. We have offices in Nuneaton and London, but you will not be required to be office-based.
