The Cardiff and Vale Respiratory team are pleased to announce a fantastic opportunity for two motivated, enthusiastic and dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialists to join and expand our existing pleural service. Applications are encouraged from highly organised and experienced nurses with exceptional communication and team working skills to join our multi-disciplinary team to support patients and carers. Prior experience in this rapidly developing field is undoubtably helpful, however we strongly anticipate that further training and support will be needed.

Successful candidates will work alongside existing Respiratory Consultants, who have specialist interest in Pleural Disease. They will work in a collaborative culture that is focussed on delivering high quality patient centred care. Although these roles include working autonomously, the existing Respiratory Consultant team will provide guidance, clinical support and training. Responsibilities will include assessment and support of patients with pleural disease.

Advance clinical skills such as thoracic ultrasound, diagnostic and therapeutic pleural procedures would be highly desirable, however not essential for application.

About The Role

The post holders will work closely alongside the existing Respiratory Medicine multi-disciplinary team. They will be supported by Respiratory Consultants with an interest in pleural disease. Key roles include:

To provide a specialist pleural in-reach service, including holistic assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients presenting with pleural disease.

Supporting a rapid ultrasound and diagnostic service to support early diagnosis and management of patients presenting with pleural disease. Support the allied medical professionals in the appropriate care of patients with pleural disease.

Assist with training of medical professionals in pleural procedures and the care of patients presenting with pleural disease Multi-disciplinary team working to ensure good communication to support timely, high quality medical care and supported discharge.

Support service evaluation, audit and research.

To work as an autonomous professional within British Thoracic Society guidelines, guided by local policies and procedures of the service.

Successful candidates must be willing to take responsibility for their own work including treatment and discharge decisions, however must show evidence of safe working practice supported by the existing pleural team.

Location:

The Pleural Nurse Specialists will be based across both University Hospital, Llandough (UHL) and the University Hospital of Wales (UHW). It is anticipated that successful candidates will support the existing pleural outpatient Consultant-led service which is based in UHL, however predominantly they will be supporting inpatient work across both sites.

The pleural nursing team will have guidance from dedicated Respiratory Consultants with sessions on both acute hospital sites to support and ultimately develop a nurse delivered service. Successful candidates will be expected to provide a degree of autonomous and flexible working patterns working within the existing multi-disciplinary team.

The existing medical team have a strong background in training allied medical professionals and developing them through their careers. Where necessary, we are anticipating the need to support our new co-workers through the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and/or qualifications in non-medical prescribing.
