Hello, we’re Kaleidoscope – a consultancy of a different kind. We work to improve health and care. We’re looking for two interns to join our team full-time for nine months, starting in September 2022.

As a social enterprise all of our work seeks to contribute to our mission: to work with others to build a future that is kind, connected and joyful.

We meet this mission by advising clients across public, private and voluntary sectors in health and care on their strategy, supporting networks and partnerships, carrying out evaluations, and designing and facilitating a whole host of face-to-face and digital events.

The opportunity

We are looking for two people to join our team as part of our Perspectives Programme – a nine month paid internship for people wanting to start a career in the health world. Whether this be one of your first jobs and you’re at the start of your career, or you have already been working for a while and are looking for a change of career, we encourage applicants from all age ranges and walks of life.

This internship is about making a real difference. Through this programme our interns will be supported to design and lead on their own project to improve the way underrepresented voices are heard in healthcare.

You will spend approximately 20% of your time (one day a week over the nine months) on your chosen project – and what this project will look like is up to you.

It could be telling the stories of a marginalised group, a project to hear lived experiences in policymaking, or something completely different! Examples of the projects some of our previous interns have done include a Zine about eating disorders within the LGBTQIA+ community and a student mental health film festival.

Alongside this, you will spend the remaining 80% of your time gaining experience of our consultancy work by providing support for our external client projects and getting involved in the internal running of our organisation.

Who we are looking for

Our first requirement is that you’re kind. Life is too short to work with people who aren’t. Second, you need to have a passion for improving health and care, and an idea for promoting underrepresented voices and celebrating diversity.

Beyond this, there is no ‘right’ sort of Kaleidoscopian; we want a company inclusive of different and unique people. We know how important diversity and inclusion is as an organisation and for fulfilling our mission of creating a world that is kind, connected and joyful. We are committed to creating a company that ensures a diversity of voices in all parts of our work. If you’re reading this wondering ‘is it really for me?’ Please get in touch to chat.

We’re flexible on the type and amount of experience you’ll bring, but these are the types of experience and qualities we are looking for:

  • a good level of literacy and numeracy, and comfortable using a computer
  • commitment to diversity and wanting to promote under-represented voices
  • a keen interest in health and care and a passion for improving it – no formal expertise required in this field – just lots of enthusiasm and interest in our work
  • a good level of organisational skills
  • a flexible and proactive attitude
  • effective at communicating in a way that suits you – you don’t need to be the loudest in the room, you just need to be able to get your ideas across.

It doesn’t matter where you got your experience from – it could be professional, from your time in education, or otherwise; the most important thing is that you are willing to learn and develop.

What we are offering

The Perspectives Programme offers:

  • a nine month placement, paid at £23,250 per annum, pro rata
  • the opportunity to design and deliver your own project, supported by Kaleidoscope colleagues
  • real work experience as part of a team delivering our consultancy projects with external clients
  • exposure to a diverse range of events in health and social care
  • a mentor to provide support and advice throughout the internship
  • flexible working, with options to work remotely and the option to have any reasonable adjustments that allow you to do the job to the best of your ability
  • visits to organisations and partners within our network
  • free lunches (when in the office)
  • table tennis matches on the office balcony (when in the office)
  • an annual leave allowance of between 20 and 40 days pro rata.

How to apply

Project pitch

Reflecting on your own experiences, or on an area that you feel particularly passionate about, pitch us a project that promotes a way in which health and care can hear from under-represented voices.

To give you an idea, some examples of under-represented voices in healthcare are transgender and gender diverse people, people living in poverty, ethnic minorities and refugees – to name a few.

We will assess your project proposal using four criteria:

  • the reason and logic behind your project proposal
  • the imagination shown in your project proposal and why it’s different
  • your approach (how you would do it)
  • how you articulate what you think the outcomes of your project would be – what would the impact of your project be and what would change as a result?

Please outline your proposal in one of the following formats:

  • Written –  maximum 2 A4 pages
  • Video – maximum 3 minutes (please send it to us via WeTransfer)
  • Slide presentation (PowerPoint or other slide programme) – max 8 slides

Include only your initials and mobile number on the proposal – we don’t want any other identifying information (put these on all pages if it’s written/slides or in the file name if it’s a video).

Please note that you will not be judged on how creatively your proposal is presented.

Deadline: 5pm, Monday 13 June.

What we offer:

  • Hybrid working
  • 20-40 days annual leave
  • Free lunch (when in the office)
  • Mentoring
  • Exposure to a diverse range of clients within health and care

What we ask:

  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Problem solving
  • Organisation
  • Commitment to diversity
  • Good level of literacy and numeracy
  • Interest in health and care
  • No experience required
  • No minimum education required
