Job Description

Guided by the camp directors, camp leaders play a key role in delivering First Hand Experiences themed weeks to children. The variety of outdoor, hands on activities will mean that no two weeks are ever the same. You will need to be high energy, passionate, imaginative and have a way of communicating with children that empowers and enthuses them.

You will have experience of leading young people in a workshop, formal or informal education setting, perhaps as a formal teacher or on other camps or as a leader of outdoor learning workshops.

You will need to not only inspire the children but your team as well, working as part of a team of up to 6 people, with the support of your Camp Director. You will also need to be comfortable both with our philosophy of channel creative responses from our children. The varied activities mean that a confidence and willingness to improve in certain areas are key as you might find yourself helping them make their own lunch, teaching a song or playing a drama game.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the weekly programme and empower children to make the most of their experiences drawing on your playfulness, energy, and imagination in order to foster a positive camp environment.
  • Lead, motivate and collaborate with your team of up to 6 facilitators, including 2 volunteers.
  • Adhere to the weekly schedule but have the confidence to change things when necessary.
  • Provide leadership and keep a high level of positive energy as the Lead Facilitator .
  • Ensure you and your team supervises campers at all times, protecting their safety, discipline and making sure that they are engaged and accessing the activity the best they can.
  • Lead by example in terms of tidiness and respectful behaviour.
  • Supervise lunch and snack times with the support of your team.
  • Take responsibility for the equipment, props and technology you will be provided with.
  • Take responsibility for keeping your space sufficiently tidy and help clean up at the end of the day.
  • Make sure you and your team are aware of special needs of campers – medical, emotional, etc. – and make sure those are attended to.
  • Assess group dynamics and be sure that all campers are participating and achieving their goals.
  • Be prepared to give parents feedback on their child's participation and progress if requested by your Camp Director.
  • Undergo face-to-face training (two days) and devote additional time on the weekend before the camp preparing for the week.
  • Be prepared to give your team formal feedback with the support of your camp director.

Profile and Experience

  • Formal teaching experience, as a practising teacher, NQT or a student teacher
  • Experience of working in an innovative way with children / young people
  • A high energy and playful outlook with an instinctive understanding of what motivates children
  • A strong interest in learning through play and experiential education
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team.
  • Be able to lead simple cooking activities
  • Musical ability would also be very useful but not to high level necessarily (piano, guitar,voice)
  • A valid DBS Certificate – this will be required PRIOR to job offer
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Punctuality is a must
  • First Aid Certificate is desirable
