Desk Researcher Internship/Graduate Internship - Working Remotely

My name is Carole Favre, and I am a French entrepreneur. I lived in the UK for 20 years, and am now located on the island of Bali. Three years ago, I set up Small Matters, a boutique consultancy business specialised in alleviating poverty through Responsible Tourism development.

What are you going to do:

After working for several international organisations in destinations such as Haiti, Lesotho or Timor-Leste I am convinced that the way we are ‘wired’ to think and see the world is as much detrimental to growth (of one’s business and of one’s life) as poor access knowledge or funding; and this is why the course I am developing focusses on addressing all these issues.

This is unique. I combine my expertise in market access and responsible tourism, with the use of processes and premises that I have learned and already apply as part of the 2-year Intuitive Coach course I just completed. In Bali, I am known as the ‘Vision Whisperer’, working with members of the BookGreener platform to unleash what they would love to achieve in life.

I seek your expertise and support to help me prepare information for my social business model canvas and for meetings that I must attend at the World Travel Market in London, from 06 to 08 November. I will be meeting with potential clients.

The Task at Hand

  • I would love you to help me find the answers to the following questions:
  • Existing online courses for SMEs in tourism (content, cost, quality);
  • Existing SME courses / workshops in South Africa and Indonesia - I need to know about schools/universities, organisations/ institutions / government / region-led initiatives (cost, content, success);
  • Business angel platforms investing in tourism or educational projects;
  • Market for self-development courses in South Africa and Indonesia (size, types of course available,
  • Popularity, cost, format);
  • Other things I do not know I need yet!

What we offer:

The work is very flexible as it is remote (you can work from anywhere) but since I must have all that information by 03rd November, you will need to work quickly! There is a 7hr time difference between London and Ubud, where I am based, which means that you can do a lot in the evening, ready for me in my morning to read.

I will mentor you on whatever course of study you are following: on top of my teaching experience in HE, also supervising dissertations, I achieved a Distinction for my MSc and was voted UK Student of the Year.

I can also support you in planning for your future, and share my intuitive tools, which are very powerful in helping you create the life you dream of.

I will share with you all the lessons I have learned so far, so that you make less mistakes than me (or different ones).

I will take you on a rewarding journey, that will add credibility to your profile for future employers – which might include me, when I have closed some sales and can afford to employ someone to start building a great team.

You are completely welcome to use any of your work for your assignments or dissertation if you need to work on real case-studies.

What we ask:

  • Wizard research skills to find information through any possible channels, even if the journey can be somewhat convoluted;
  • BA/BSc or a MSc in sustainability, social sciences or development, social entrepreneurship, or anything related to those;
  • Genuine commitment to contributing to bettering the lives of others who are less privileged;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Personality that includes a great sense of humour and an ability to deal with a French woman who is driven and likes to make things happen;
  • Ability to respond to what needs to be done quickly;
  • Curiosity and eagerness to learn;
  • Interest in the field of travel and tourism (or a passion for travel to developing nations);
  • Total integrity, honesty and commitment as this is my life project and I can’t have anything put on hold because of other commitments (I will be more flexible after the November deadline).

Extra information

I am passionate about local economic development and bringing knowledge and empowerment to small business owners, especially women and social entrepreneurs who want to leave a legacy. I believe that everyone deserves access to high quality knowledge regardless of their background, and that lacking knowledge is a massive barrier to growing business.

I am very organised but sometimes do get too long to get into gear, hence the urgency! I am a perfectionist but right now I realise that what I need is an MVP, so we will just have to do what we can to the best of our abilities. The one thing I can guarantee is that it will be challenging and rewarding; and that I will be for ever grateful for your support.

To put it bluntly, I don’t have any money right now, which is why I can only advertise for unpaid placements. My day job pays for my bills and life in Ubud. I spend a lot of time on designing the lessons for the platform (so am on reduced income) and operate on a minimal budget. This is pretty much the life of a normal start-up.
