Job description

Job Description

Level 2 Retail Apprentice – Customer Team Member

(Co-op Academy students ONLY)

12-15 month programme

£8.00 per hour plus benefits

30 hours per week

Apprenticeships don’t have to be a plan B to college or university. Our level 2 retail apprenticeship is designed to help you build your skills and knowledge, continuing your learning beyond the classroom and kick starting your career.

The programme will last between 12 and 15 months, during which you’ll be learning the fundamentals of retailing in an exciting and fast paced environment. Alongside the day to day role, you’ll cover around 11 modules in subjects such as marketing, finance, sales, stock, customer service and communications. You’ll also have the opportunity to build on your Maths and English skills too.

It’s really different to school and college too. You’ll be working 30 hours per week, around 8 of which will be allocated to learn and complete your studies in your own time. But don’t worry, we won’t leave you on your own. You’ll be completely supported by both your store manager and your very own learning coach who’ll help make sure you’re on track with your learning. You’ll also be earning the same wage as other colleagues who aren’t on an apprenticeship.

And it doesn’t have to stop there. If you want to further your learning, once you complete your level 2 apprenticeship you’ll have the opportunity to join our level 3 or degree level programmes, helping you to progress up the ladder and continue your learning here at the Co-op.

What you’ll do:

  • work 30 hours per week in store as a customer team member (you’ll be paid £8.00 per hour – higher than the national apprentice wage)

  • work and study towards a level 2 retailer apprenticeship, with future opportunities to work towards a level 3, 4 and even a degree

  • actively promote Co-op membership and make a difference to the local community

  • work on all areas of the shop, from tills to deliveries; presenting and handling our products with care

  • go above and beyond for customers, supporting them in any way you can

  • apply your learnings from the programme to your work in store

  • use interactive workbooks to support your development alongside your dedicated coach

This programme will suit people who:

  • are a current or previous student from one of our Co-op Academies

  • are eligible to work in the UK on a full time and permanent basis

  • are comfortable and committed to working 30 hours per week across variable shift patterns including some weekends

  • are excited to build a career in retail at Co-op

  • are willing to be flexible, both studying and working at the same time

  • enjoy working as part of a team

Please note**: if you currently work for Co-op in our food stores, head to the apprentices portal on the colleague intranet to see what internal apprenticeship opportunities are available, and how to apply. If you work for Co-op, but not in our stores, we’ll be advertising other level 2 opportunities later in the year. Keep an eye out, or register for job alerts on our careers site.

Why Co-op?

As a Co-op colleague you’ll do work that matters in an organisation where principles are just as important as profits. You’ll get a competitive rate of pay, premium rates for any hours worked between 10pm and 6am and if you work on a public holiday (not including bank holidays). You’ll also get a package that includes:

  • a competitive salary

  • 28 days holiday (rising to 32 in line with service)

  • an annual incentive scheme

  • discounts on Co-op products and services

  • a pension with up to 10% employer contributions

  • eligible to apply for an NUS discount card

Building an inclusive workplace

We’re actively building diverse teams and welcome applications from everyone. But simply having a diverse workforce is not enough. We want to create an inclusive environment, where everyone can contribute their best work and develop to their full potential. We celebrate our differences, and recognise the importance of our teams reflecting the communities they serve.

We can make reasonable adjustments to our interview process according to your needs. And we offer a flexible working environment so you can adjust your hours to suit your personal circumstances. You can find out more about Co-op people policies at coop.co.uk/peoplepolicies.

**As part of your application you’ll need to complete an online assessment. It will take you around 12 minutes to complete this test.
