The Mountain Trust is a non-profit UK registered charity which has been pioneering health, education, and human rights projects in remote and marginalised communities in Nepal for two decades. We deliver flexible, tailored placements which harness the unique abilities of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds—whether your skills lie in engineering, teaching, medicine or photography, you can make a tangible difference to the lives of the Nepali people whilst developing your own skillset. We also offer medical electives in the Pokhara region to those studying medicine. Due to the scale of our organisation, we are delighted to be able to offer placements to the vast majority of applicants under the belief that every single person can make a positive difference.
Since 2007, we have been broadcasting high quality lessons on FM radio six nights a week during term times throughout the western region of Nepal. These lessons, which reach thousands of students who would otherwise have little or no access to formal education, are written and presented by some of Pokhara's best teachers, giving students in rural areas access to an education otherwise reserved for their wealthier urban counterparts. 25% of Nepali women are illiterate, and we hope that low-cost, high impact schemes such as Radio Guru will help change that statistic. We are also launching a Civic Education Programme broadcasting lessons of civil rights with a focus on minorities.
The earthquakes which hit Nepal in April 2015 had a devastating effect on the country and cost 8,000 lives. Mountain Trust volunteers provided Emergency Relief Aid to villages which received no direct aid from the government or international disaster relief agencies. We also helped the villagers to rebuild from the ruins, constructing a school with earthquake-resistant walls to protect from future earthquakes, as well as committing to building 57 houses in partnership with Islamic Help. With your help, we can complete this project as well as many others.
Our tailored projects promise to be a life-changing experience; ask any of our previous years' volunteers and they will tell you the same! We offer the rare opportunity to be involved with some genuinely groundbreaking humanitarian work. Please send a copy of your CV to our Operations Director, Taryn Challender, for further consideration. Thank you.
