Do's and dont's when Job Hunting

Do

  • Tell everyone and anyone that you are looking for a job. You never know what contacts they may have.
  • Make use of a range of resources from online job boards and newspapers to networking and agencies. Not only will you find a wide range of jobs to choose from but you will get an idea of what the job market is like at the moment.
  • Jot down the type of jobs you would be happy to have, your key qualities and your interests. Use this list to reflect on when you see a job that might interest you.
  • Apply for jobs that interest you, after all you want to be happy in what you do right!? By matching positions to your profile you will only enhance your experience and abilities as well as being happy in what you do at the same time.
  • Take time to create a brilliant CV and cover letter. Remember, this acts as your business card advertising you!
  • Make sure you are clear, positive and concise in your cover letter and explain why you feel you are the best person for the job.
  • Make sure you are prepared and read up on the company, what they do, history etc and of course the job role!
  • Have confidence.

Don't

  • Send out several random letters hoping that someone will react. Narrow your search.
  • Forget to check your spelling and grammar thoroughly when applying. This includes application forms, cover letters and CV.
  • Address the wrong person in your cover letter. Ensure that you find out who you are sending the letter to and if this is not known address it as “Dear Sir/Madam”.
  • Don’t be late!
  • Don’t attend the interview like you have just walked in off the streets. Try to look as presentable as possible.
  • Don’t be afraid to share your CV and cover letter with friends and family members who have experience and can suggest changes and adaptations.
