How To Use LinkedIn To find A Job?

LinkedIn is the number one social media networking platform for job seekers. It would be foolish not to have a profile. Unlike other social media platforms, LinkedIn has a more professional feel. You don't update your status, and upload pictures of your cat like you would do on Facebook. You have to treat your LinkedIn profile like your CV. Make sure your profile has all the relevant experience, work and school, and don't forget any volunteering! Follow our tips below on how to find jobs on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn Tips

  • In your opening statement, make sure to include all your skills, what your current job is (if applicable) and any other information you think can catch a potential recruiters eye. After all, first impressions count and your opening statement should be a place for you to sell yourself. Try not to make your statement too long. Recruiters don’t want to read an essay. You should aim for 2000 characters maximum.

The rest of your profile should be filled in, as well, here are some character limits for you;

  • Headline - 120
  • Opening statement - 2000
  • Your name - 40 (Use your full real name!)
  • Current Job Position - 100
  • Current Job Description - 2000
  • Company Name - 100
  • Skills and Endorsements - you can list 50 skills
  • Interests - 1000

  • Your profile picture should be of you. Some people like to have a professional photograph taken, but if you can’t afford this - don’t worry. A nice, full face in colour or black and white is acceptable.

  • The next step is to network. Start liking pages and groups that interest you and follow people who are inspirational to you. You can also send connection requests to people who perhaps work in the industry or company that you're interested in.

  • Be active! Make scrolling through LinkedIn a part of your routine. Like posts and articles, comment and share. The more active you are, the better chance you have of catching someone's eye.

  • Start applying for jobs! LinkedIn always has new job posts being uploaded by companies. If one of the job openings sounds right up your street, apply for it!

If you follow these social media tips, using LinkedIn to find a job should be easy.

How to Use Twitter To Find A Job?

LinkedIn may dominate the social media job search. However, Twitter is also a useful social media platform you can use to help you find a job. The best Twitter tips we can give you is; to be active! No one likes a dead profile. Start tweeting but be thoughtful and professional. Try not to tweet about taboo topics or controversial subjects. You can have a personality, but beware, if you’re going to use Twitter to help you find a job, then keep it clean.

Twitter Tips

  • Have a professional username - ideally related to your real name if possible. Please don’t use your embarrassing email username when you were in school and avoid anything too sexualised. A username like ‘hotbunnixox’ isn’t going to go down well with potential recruiters.

  • The same applies to your profile picture. A simple photo of your face will do nicely. While you're looking at your profile picture - update your tagline to say that you're looking for work.

  • Start following Twitter users that are of interest to you. Of course, following, retweeting and liking people who are in the industry that you're seeking employement in, will help, a lot.

  • Don't be selfish! Share not only your content but other people's content too. After all, as the saying goes; 'sharing is caring.' You can also tweet about projects you are working on, and make sure you retweet posts that are relevant to you and your interests.

  • Take advantage that you can show off your personality more on Twitter, compared to LinkedIn. Of course, be professional and discreet. You can tweet a joke or tell a funny story anecdote of your day. Inject some personality into your Twitter, but don't go overboard. Avoid getting into endless arguments with trolls and don't express your opinion if it may offend. Try to avoid politics, if you can.

  • Become a hashtag pro. Twitter loves hashtags, and you should love them too. Hashtags are a way of organising your tweets into categories. By tapping on a hashtag, you will also see all the other tweets that are related to your tweet. Why don’t you search #vacancy in the Twitter search bar and see what you find? Remember to mix up your hashtags and see what hashtags are trending in your area about job searches.

The pros of social media mean you can tailor make your job search. Following and sharing content from people that work in the industry you’re interested in, establishing connections and growing your network, is a fantastic way to get your foot through the door.

How To Find Jobs On Facebook?

Facebook is an exciting and widely used social media platform. Many individuals and companies ranging from small to large, all have some Facebook presence. Because of this, Facebook is quite a useful platform to find a job, especially with their Facebook Job feature.

Before you start your job search, make sure your profile is clean, neat and professional. You may need to change your privacy settings so people can at least see your name, profile picture and a small bio about yourself. Make sure people don’t tag you in awful photos and don’t update your statuses with profanity or anything that may offend. You should start liking and following the company's Facebook pages and be active on their posts by liking, commenting and sharing.

Facebook Tips

  • Make sure your profile is clean and professional. Try to use your real name, but if you can’t, make sure it isn’t sexual or something that may offend. Have a simple, full face profile picture of you - not your cat or some random character. (Recruiters also are not interested in your Facebook profile if your photo is you half-naked, too.)

  • Change your privacy settings. You don’t have to go full public, but be public enough so that potential hiring managers can at least click on your profile, see your name and your picture and a bio about yourself. You may want to include interests and pages that you like, too.

  • Start networking, by liking, commenting and sharing posts made by companies that interest you. Of course, you can share content from companies you don’t necessarily want to work for, but if those companies show your personality in a positive light - share away!

  • Because you have already started networking within the companies Facebook pages, you should begin to see when they post vacancies. There are two locations you can find the Facebook Job Search. One place is the company’s specific Facebook page under the Jobs tab; the other place is on a separate jobs page. You need to sign in and start searching for a job using the filter on the left-hand side.

  • Edit yourself. Make sure you haven’t got old or embarrassing photos of yourself tagged on Facebook. Recruiters or hiring managers won’t be impressed if you have albums full of you passed out drunk. Remember you’re trying to create a good impression from people who don’t know you.

  • Resist the trolls. Try not to comment in frustration or anger on posts. The best advice is not to read the comment section and resist the temptation to put your opinion down. Not only is this good for making sure your Facebook profile is clean, but it's also good for your mental health. No one needs to read hatred or ignorance daily.

  • Actively let people know you’re looking for a job, especially if you don’t have any current connections in your Facebook friends. However, if you do have a job right now and are friends with your boss, it’s probably best not to advertise your new job search on social media. The best way to approach this is by sending personal messages to potential companies and recruiters where you would like to work.

If you follow these tips, you’re bound to find jobs on Facebook. Remember to keep your profile clean and professional.
