The Healthcare assistant apprenticeship at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable clinical experience and training in an acute hospital.
An apprenticeship is suitable for anyone who has an interest in pursuing a career in healthcare and gain a healthcare support worker level (2) apprenticeship. The ideal candidate will have the welfare of the children and young people in our care and be passionate about providing the best outcomes for everyone.
Our Children’s centre has a 32 bedded paediatric inpatient ward as well as an Assessment Unit, an Outpatient Department, a Day Unit together with a High Dependency unit and oncology shared care unit. Within the Apprenticeship you will rotate between Planned Services and Acute Care.
Healthcare assistants play a vital role in the care of our patients; working under the direction of healthcare professionals they take care of the day-to-day needs of patients by providing help with personal care, meals and mobility. They also carry out a range of housekeeping duties as well as performing patient observations such as taking a patient’s temperature, pulse, respiration rate and blood pressure.
Healthcare assistants are expected to be friendly, caring and sensitive with the confidence to communicate with patients and healthcare professional colleagues.
The job of Healthcare assistant is a physical one and successful apprentices will be expected to work a shift pattern this will include early morning, evening, weekend and night working (subject to age restrictions).
The maximum working week is 37.5 hours / week; each shift pattern includes an unpaid break of 30 minutes.
The young person (if under 18 years) will have a break every 4.5 hours worked; have 2 consecutive days off and will work a night shift only in exceptional circumstances when continuity of clinical care necessitates it.
The standard shift pattern on the ward areas is:
Early: 07:00 – 15:00
Late: 11:30 – 19:30
Night: 19:00 - 07:30 (if over 18 years of age)
Or Long Days 07:00 – 19:30 (if over 18 years of age)
The key result areas for the role are that the apprentice will be required to:
