Job Title: Healthcare Assistant Apprentice
Hours: Apprenticeship contract
37.5 hours a week (Fixed Term for 15 months)
Salary: GHNHSFT Apprentice Terms and Conditions
£10,132 pa, £5.18 per hour
Department/Area: Clinical Wards and Departments are available at Cheltenham General Hospital and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital
Accountable to: Ward / Departmental Manager
Location: Cheltenham or Gloucester
The Healthcare assistant apprenticeship at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable clinical experience and training in an acute hospital.
An apprenticeship is suitable for anyone who has an interest in pursuing a career in healthcare and gain a healthcare support worker intermediate level (2) apprenticeship qualification.
Healthcare assistants play a vital role in the care of patients; working under the direction of healthcare professionals they take care of the day-to-day needs of patients by providing help with personal care, meals and mobility. They also carry out a range of housekeeping duties as well as performing patient observations such as taking a patient’s temperature, pulse, respiration rate and blood pressure.
Throughout the apprenticeship journey you will:

be supported in the workplace by a mentor
-
have the equivalent of a day a week ‘off-the-job training’ to develop your learning
-
be in regular contact with the Training Provider and the Lifelong Learning Team

have access to a virtual learning platform
-
receive support from others in the cohort
-
attend workshops where you will have the opportunity to discuss and share
Healthcare assistants are expected to be friendly, caring and sensitive with the confidence to communicate with patients and healthcare professional colleagues.
The job of Healthcare assistant is a physical one and successful apprentices will be expected to work a shift pattern this will include early morning, evening and weekend working.
The standard shift pattern on the ward areas is:
Early: 07:15 - 15:15
Late: 13:15 - 21:15
Night: 20:45 - 07:45
The maximum working week is 37.5 hours / week; each shift pattern includes an unpaid break of 30 minutes.
The young person (under 18 years) will have a break every 4.5 hours worked; have 2 consecutive days off and will work a night shift only in exceptional circumstances when continuity of clinical care necessitates it.
The apprentice will be required to:

Undertake delegated work of the multidisciplinary team to assist in the provision of individualised planned patient care under indirect supervision

Use a degree of initiative to ensure patient’s personal needs are met, and the patient’s condition is reported to qualified staff

Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy environment, by ensuring orderliness and hygiene and safety of the ward/department

Gain competencies in skills specific to the role and department.
At all times ensuring a high standard of care is delivered to patient’s carers and visitors and a kind, caring and professional attitude whilst considering dignity, privacy, cultural and religious needs is maintained.

Literacy/Numeracy assessments will be held at Redwood Education Centre, Gloucestershire Royal Hospital on Monday 30th September 2019
Interviews will be held on Monday 14th October 2019 at Sandford Education Centre, Cheltenham General Hospital
Successful applicants will start as HCA apprentices on Monday 2nd December 2019 and remain on programme for a minimum of 12 months
