Job description

A specialist school for deaf students is seeking a Communication Support Worker with BSL to start ASAP!

The Sixth Form Communication Support Worker (CSW) is expected to work flexibly to meet the needs of the Sixth Form staff and students. They will be expected to work both on-site in the school and off-site with our external providers and Work Related Learning partners. There will be occasional evening meetings which the CSW will be expected to attend. There will also be college enrolment dates in August, the CSW will be expected to support students during the enrolment period.
The role of the CSW is to enable deaf students to access, as fully as possible, the curriculum both on-site and off-site. Their post will involve interpreting for hearing staff on and off-site and voicing over for students. The CSW will also be required to offer other forms of communication support, e.g. note taking, examination support and translating written English to BSL and BSL to written English.
Information must be presented in a form accessible to the student/college staff. In general, for a CSW to be most effective, adaptation and modification of content, structure and language during the lesson may be required in terms of:
sign language skills
ability to take in new information
level of language
The CSW should interpret the information provided by the student/teacher without altering the content. However, they may adjust their delivery mode to match the communication needs of the student.
