This role entails…

The ITV Production Training Scheme is a 12 month fully paid programme for new entrants to TV. The aim is to home grow exceptional talent and give the training needed to kickstart a long and successful career in TV.

There will be placements with 11 ITV Production Companies both scripted and non-scripted based across the UK. The programme aims to attract candidates from backgrounds that are current underrepresented in the industry, including those from a lower socio economic background, those from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities and disabled people. We also welcome applicants who have some life experience, be that college, university, a few years of working already under their belt, with the maturity to make the most of this opportunity, and this opportunity is also open to those to whom the apprenticeships are close (eg University graduates and anyone who has already done a media related qualification.

Some Key Responsibilities:

The Trainee Script Editor will have some knowledge of the script editing process but will be supported by the team in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of the Script Editing process across a full slate of diverse and original projects. As the training progresses the role-holder will be required to undertake tasks proactively and without full supervision.

In production we will train you to:

· Read all scripts throughout editorial stages.

· Co-ordinate and assemble notes from script team, producers, directors and commissioners on the relevant projects.

· Attend script meetings and write up notes accurately and with sensitivity.

· Contribute your own editorial opinion on scripts.

· Work closely with the Script Exec and with the production team to ensure day-to-day continuity in story and other editorial issues.

· Conduct in-depth research to ensure script accuracy. 

· Alert Script Exec to any difficulties or inconsistencies which may arise from such research and to suggest ideas for possible alternatives where research suggests that the original idea is no longer viable.

· To engage with and promote diversity in storytelling.

· To help create any series documents, character biogs etc.

· To assist with the negative checking and compliance for all scripts. To ensure that all reasonable action has been taken to avoid copyright infringement, libel and defamation.

· To proof, format and prepare scripts for production.

· To issue with amendments and coloured pages.

· To help write/create any literary material needed by art department.

· Work closely with, and provide assistance to all departments during production with script-related enquiries.

· Assist with post-production paperwork, including billings and synopses.

· To always work respectfully, sensitively and diplomatically with writers.

In development:

· Read submitted scripts, pitches and books, and provide in-depth editorial coverage and formal reports to the development team in order to act as an editorial filter.

· To carry out research as directed by Creative Director or Script Exec.

· To build a strong knowledge of research sources and be able to conduct research for development, double sourced where necessary.

· To put together industry intelligence documents.

· To have a good knowledge of British writers, established and emerging.

· To have an awareness of agents and client lists, commissioners and platforms.

· To begin establishing contacts and building relationships across the writing industry.

· To bring ideas to development meetings and be on the look-out for story ideas in newspapers, magazines, radio, podcasts, books etc

To be considered for this opportunity you will need to demonstrate the following skills:

  • Proven passion for a career as a Script Editor and TV drama. 

  • A passion for storytelling with editorial flair and taste. 

  • You will have good literary skills, and a hunger to learn the craft of script editing. 

  • A knowledge of the TV development process. 

  • An understanding of what is required when researching, taking meeting notes, summarising books, and giving notes on scripts. 

  • A proven ability and experience in working across a variety of software programmes and databases. 

  • Experience in an administrative role. 

  • Excellent written communication, attention to detail and organisational skills. 

  • You have worked in a role where you've worked in isolation and had to use your own initiative.
