The South of Tyne Pathology Service was established in April 2013 with the consolidation of Pathology across the 2 North Eastern Trusts of Gateshead and South Tyneside & Sunderland. Biochemistry has laboratories at all 3 sites with the Pathology Centre laboratory being sited at Gateshead and acute laboratories at Sunderland and South Tyneside. The Pathology Centre has been proposed as a Hub laboratory in the NHS Improvement Pathology model for the N1 region.

The Laboratories are situated in the heart of the North East, close to the historic and cultural cities of Newcastle and Durham. The area offers excellent leisure, sport and shopping facilities with the Northumbria coast and countryside just a few miles away. Transport links across the country and abroad are facilitated by easy access to the North East mainline rail network, an international airport and a North Sea ferry terminal. There is reasonably priced accommodation in good locations that is within easy commuting distance.

The department has state of the art equipment and technology and prides itself on being forward thinking and innovative. It also has a proven track record in staff training and development. We are currently hold full UKAS accreditation status.

To support the South of Tyne Pathology Biochemistry Service opportunities have arisen for Trainee Biomedical Scientist / Biomedical Scientist / Specialist Biomedical Scientist positions to work across the three hospital sites. This is an ideal opportunity to gain access to the Biochemistry Service and the North East region.

    Full participation in the relevant Department’s extended working day and the out of hours service is a mandatory requirement of all posts.
