COMMUNICATIONS AND FUNDRAISING INTERN (Paid)
Be our new Communications & Fundraising Intern at Cancer Support UK. This is a great establishing internship role for people who want to work in the charity sector and/or communications and marketing. As a small, ambitious and agile charity, you’ll have the chance to be exposed to many areas of the organisation’s operations, and be involved at a uniquely holistic level.

COMMUNICATIONS AND FUNDRAISING INTERN
- Flexible: home-based or London office
- This is a paid internship - the role is compensated at National Living Wage - London rate (£19,747 pro rata)
- Full time desirable, but other working patterns considered e.g. 3 or 4 days a week
- 3 month initial FTC, with the potential to extend to 1 year
Cancer Support UK provides practical and emotional support to people living with cancer, both during and after the treatment period. We support people with all kinds of cancer across the UK. We are now looking for a Communications and Fundraising Intern to join our team.
This is a great establishing internship for people who want to work in the charity sector. As an agile charity, you’ll have the chance to be exposed to many areas of the organisation’s operations, and be involved at a uniquely holistic level. This role would suit a candidate with an interest in marketing and communications, looking to get started in their career and develop their skills in social media management and digital communications.
The Communications and Fundraising Intern will work closely with other members of Cancer Support UK to efficiently promote the charity to a wide audience. You’ll be creating posts and managing our online community across a variety of social media channels, sourcing case study stories, promoting our wide range of fundraising appeals, and helping to tell narratives about people who are positively impacted by our services.
Principle duties
- Update the charity’s social media channels on a regular basis
- Source and interview charity case studies, and maintain database of usage permissions
- Draft press releases to achieve coverage in a wide range of offline and online publications
- Attend and photograph fundraising events (some evening/weekend working may be necessary)
- Draft and prepare a bi-monthly email newsletter
- Create organic social media posts and manage social media communities, engaging with comments and direct messages
- Produce short case study videos for social media and website purposes
- Work with our fundraising partner, ClothesAid, to promote the scheme in relevant locations and at relevant times using geo-targetted Facebook and Instagram advertising
- Compile analytics reports on the charity’s performance on social media
- Enhance press release campaigns and fundraising appeals with accompanying stories on social media
- Promote the charity’s fundraising events, as well as external events and awareness days/weeks/months
- Provide communications telephone cover in the absence of other team members
- Manage and prioritise an unpredictable and busy workload
- Deliver against clear objectives and key performance indicators
- Proactively contribute to the achievement of targets for the charity as a whole
- Support the community fundraiser with stewarding community and event fundraisers including charity skydivers
- Research corporate supporter prospects, compiling contacts and information to provide prospect pipeline to corporate fundraiser
- Research of trusts and foundations to provide additional prospects to the trusts manager
- Support the marketing of our corporate cancer training
- Support community and corporate in-person activities when required i.e. delivering collateral/equipment
Desirable skillset
- Fluency in Canva / Photoshop / Premiere Pro
- Proven background in copywriting
- Demonstrable knowledge of gaining press placements
- A background in social media marketing, community management and account growth
- Experience using Wordpress as a CMS
Miscellaneous
- Ability to present oneself in a professional manner as a representative of the charity
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of duty including communications, fundraising and donor data
- A supportive and collaborative team member
- Hold a flexible approach to work when asked to take on other duties when the team needs
to cover holidays, or at times of workload pressure - Adopt a supportive approach when working with other colleagues within the charity
- Carry out other projects and duties as directed by the Head of Communications and Chief Executive
We are more interested in a candidate’s drive, track record and skillset than where or if they went to university.
