Background

South West London Pathology is an award winning pathology partnership between three leading Hospital Trusts – St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Croydon Health Services NHS Trust – designed to provide an integrated, high quality pathology service for hospitals and GPs across South West London, by bringing together the best of each Trust’s service and providing them within a single organisation.

 

The Role:

This post is based at Croydon University Hospital Clinical Blood Sciences (CBS) Laboratory however the post holder may be required to work at any of the South West London Pathology sites as and when necessary.

Croydon University Hospital Laboratory operates a 24hr shift system providing cover to a busy A&E and acute services. The Laboratory is equipped with Roche c8000 analysers with P612 pre/post analytics automation for Biochemistry, and ACL Top 550, Beckman Coulter DxH 900 with AutoMate 1200 for pre/post analytics Haematology and coagulation services, as well as BioRad IH-1000/500 for automated Blood Transfusion services. Samples that require quick turnaround time are processed on site. The bulk of the routine GP and OPD haematology and biochemistry work is referred to the Hub laboratory at St Georges Hospital. Croydon laboratory has 45 technical staff processing an approximate workload of 700-800k tests per year.

An opportunity has arisen for BANK Advanced Biomedical Support Workers to support rapid COVID-19 testing . You will be required to work with laboratory equipment and processes across the Blood Sciences disciplines (Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Central Pathology Reception). Although previous experience as a biomedical support worker in a clinical laboratory will be an advantage, full training will be provided.

The vacancies are being offered on STAFF BANK arrangements. The hours of work and shift pattern will be agreed during the interview. Preference will be given to candidates able to participate in out-of-hours shifts (late evenings, weekends and night shifts) after suitable training and competence assessments have been completed. The role would suit candidates wishing to gain experience in a medical laboratory as new or career change before applying for substantive roles.
