Opportunity to gain skills and experience, with support and training provided by City of York's 'centre of excellence' for children with special needs, the Beehive.
Personal Assistant/ mentor wanted for minimum 4 hours per week (flexible) to provide support to a 15 year old young man with autism. He enjoys spending time with his cats, customising Star Wars/ Marvel action figures, listening to music, visiting the cinema, funfairs, theme parks and wildlife parks. An interest in fitness would also be an advantage.
Your role is to support the young man to do the things he enjoys at home and in the community, and to encourage him to expand his range of interests. He is very anxious and finds it hard to try new things, so gentle encouragement and patience will be required.
Support would initially be in the family home with a parent present at all times, but could progress to taking the young person out with 2:1 care.
Full enhanced DBS check will be required.
Although mentioned in the job ad, experience is desirable not necessary as support and training will be provided through the Beehive short breaks service. This role could really suit a student of teaching, psychology, mental health nursing or related disciplines, who has a future interest in working with people with autism and/or mental health needs.
The right attitude and personality is critical. You will need humour, energy, flexibility and lots of patience!

The role is currently funded to 4 hours per week, but it is very likely that additional hours will be funded by children's social care. As the young man is not currently in school, when the hours are worked can be negotiated to suit the successful candidate. Evenings and weekend availability would be of interest.
