Introduction
Come and join the team as a Consultant Psychiatrist at Wellesley Hospital, a growing mental health service, that has recently opened its doors to a new learning disability ward.  You'll join the team as you provide support on the Mendip ward, where your knowledge and skills will be valued as you change lives for the better.
 
Working 37.5 hours a week, you will support the team in delivering individualised approaches to the care and treatment to people who have been admitted with acute mental conditions, including learning disabilities and/or autism.
 

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will be primarily focused on supporting and overseeing a caseload of up to 20 services users on the Mendip ward. This will see you provide specialist treatments to address their risk behaviours and support in furthering their recovery. You may also be required to support other wards.

You will be a part of an environment that is consultant-led in delivering care, which will see you be involved in the strategic development of the team and broader services. With experience from the NHS or private sector, you will have a section 12(2) approval and Approved clinician status, which should be renewed on the agreed procedures.

Wellesley Hospital is situated in Wellington, close to Taunton and commutable from Exeter and Yeovil.

Other responsibilities:

  • Oversee assessment of referrals/admissions
  • Mental Health Act implementation and liaison with Ministry of Justice
  • Undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients including ensuring all NHSE contractual obligations are met (e.g. timely review of assessments etc in line with KPIs).
  • Record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively
  • You will provide clinical leadership to the team and will participate in a variety of meetings, including individual care reviews, care programme approach meetings, medicolegal meetings and discharge planning meetings. 
  • Design and deliver training 
  • Participate in annual appraisals for consultants
  • Contribution to clinical governance and responsibility for setting and monitoring standards
  • Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement activities and service/team evaluation and the planning of future service developments

To be successful in this role, you'll need:

  • Maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval
  • CCT in General Adult or Forensic psychiatry
  • Experience of working within forensic settings, ideally inpatient settings and expertise in risk management
  • Be Medically qualified (MRC Psych or equivalent)
  • Leadership skills and experience
  • Essential understanding of current developments in psychiatry and other aspects of mental health 
  • Substantial knowledge of change management, relevant legislation, contemporary issues in mental health, recruitment and retention issues for doctors, knowledge of, and experience in purchaser/provider contractual matters
  • Previous experience as a Consultant Psychiatrist
