Job title:          Cover Supervisor 

Location:         Oak Tree School, Truro, Cornwall

Salary:             Up to £22,000 per annum depending upon experience/qualifications 

Hours:             Monday to Friday 8am - 4.30pm 

Contract:         Permanent; Term time only

Are you an aspiring teacher looking to progress your career or a qualified teacher looking for a change of direction. You will be comfortable in being at the front of the classroom, be able to adapt and respond quickly, delivering high quality lessons that allow pupils to make academic progress in the absence of their class teacher. 

About the role

The role of a Cover Supervisor is diverse and challenging but also very rewarding. You will supervise classes during times when cover is needed across the school. You will be managing pupil behaviour in line with the school's policies and procedures, as well as supporting pupils in undertaking learning activities across the curriculum. 

  • To cover in classes throughout the week and lead lessons 
  • Support pupils effectively, creating a safe & engaging learning environment 
  • Ensure academic progress is maintained in teacher absence 
  • Prepare the classroom for effective learning 
  • Undertake such duties as are delegated by SLT 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • To create a positive learning environment has good and strong classroom management. 
  • Able to provide support to learners. 
  • Present work from a lesson plan to the pupils. 
  • To communicate effectively to pupils and staff. 
  • Be confident, enthusiastic & positive on a daily basis. 
  • To cover in classes throughout the week, not just general absence etc. 
  • Able to engage appropriately with pupils, adults and develop rapport. 
  • Able to recognise conflict and challenging behaviours with pupils and willing to address behaviours once trained. 
  • Able to engage in a variety of teaching activities to support the teacher and to deliver teaching and learning in your specialist subject. 
  • Be adaptable, flexible, be able to work at short notice and get to schools quickly. 
  • To support groups of pupils, some of whom may display challenging behaviour.

Oak Tree School is a specialist provision positioned near the city of Truro in Cornwall. The school provides full-time specialist co-education for up to 83 pupils and young people aged 7 to 16 who experience social, emotional, mental health, communication difficulties and associated challenging behaviours. These pupils and young people often cannot cope, function or achieve within a mainstream environment. The aim is to provide a structured, nurturing approach, with pupils accessing a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum to meet their significant needs.
