Motor Underwriter – Commercial Motor

Location: London (Hybrid)

Contract: Full-time, Permanent

Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Motor Underwriter to join its Commercial Motor team in London. This broker-facing role focuses on underwriting new and existing business across a diverse portfolio of clients within the London and South East region.

The position offers exposure to complex and technical risks, providing the opportunity to use underwriting expertise to shape portfolio performance, develop broker relationships, and contribute to strategic growth. This is an excellent opportunity for an underwriter looking to further develop their portfolio and influence within a commercial underwriting environment.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite commercial motor risks in line with the business plan and delegated underwriting authority.
  • Manage new and renewal business across a varied portfolio of broker relationships.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, customers, business partners, and internal stakeholders.
  • Develop and grow broker relationships in line with strategic and commercial objectives.
  • Apply reinsurance strategy appropriately to minimise risk and support portfolio performance.
  • Contribute to the development of underwriting strategy, knowledge sharing, and best practice.
  • Promote the wider business and underwriting proposition positively in the market.
  • Monitor market conditions and demonstrate strong awareness of market cycles to inform underwriting decisions.
  • Support portfolio development through sound judgement, data analysis, and commercial insight.

Requirements

Essential

  • Proven experience in commercial or motor underwriting within the insurance sector.
  • Strong commercial acumen with an understanding of profitability drivers and portfolio management.
  • Solid technical underwriting knowledge, including regulatory and risk profiling requirements.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience using Excel and underwriting or modelling tools.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to negotiate effectively and influence outcomes.
  • Strong organisational and prioritisation skills, with attention to detail.

Desirable

  • Experience underwriting complex or technical motor risks.
  • Exposure to broker-led distribution models within regional portfolios.
  • Experience contributing to underwriting strategy or best practice development.
