  • Confident communication skills, able to work with colleagues at all levels
  • Strong time-management, organisation and self-motivation
  • Ability to build relationships, collaborate and work safely within multidisciplinary teams
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn through varied placements
  • Commitment to pursuing IEng or CEng professional accreditation

Locations:

London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol, Leeds, Milton Keynes, Middlesbrough, Basingstoke, Perth, Shrewsbury, Motherwell, Rugby.

What You’ll Be Doing

Your programme begins with a business familiarisation phase, giving you a broad understanding of how the rail system works across multiple engineering and operational functions. This foundation prepares you for structured placements within your chosen discipline.

Throughout the scheme, you will:

  • Rotate across a range of civil engineering placements
  • Support the delivery of major investment and asset management projects
  • Learn how infrastructure assets are designed, assessed, maintained and renewed
  • Build technical practical experience across Track, Structures, Geotechnics and related areas
  • Work with engineers and specialists across multidisciplinary teams

Professional Development

You’ll be supported from the start with:

  • Registration with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), with costs covered
  • Structured training modules, covering technical and leadership development
  • Quarterly and annual reviews with a Supervising Civil Engineer
  • Coaching, CPD, and discipline-specific development
  • A clear pathway toward professional accreditation (IEng in ~3–4 years, CEng in ~5–6 years)

After the two-year scheme, you will progress into your first permanent engineering role, continuing the next stage of your accreditation journey.
