Senior Engineer (Civils / Infrastructure)

Location: Newmarket

Overview

An established construction business is seeking an experienced Senior Engineer to support the delivery of civils and infrastructure works on live construction sites. The role requires a technically strong, proactive individual capable of leading engineering activities, supporting site teams, and ensuring high standards of quality, accuracy and safety.


Key Responsibilities

  • Liaise closely with site teams, subcontractors and main contractors
  • Lead and support site engineering activities, providing accurate and timely setting‑out information
  • Carry out topographical surveys and produce high‑quality as‑built surveys
  • Set out infrastructure works including roads, drainage, RC ground beams, pile caps and general civils works
  • Operate Leica Total Stations (TS16), GPS and other relevant survey equipment
  • Raise and manage RFIs (Requests for Information) and CVIs (Contractor’s/Verbal Instructions)
  • Undertake quality inspections and checks, ensuring compliance with project requirements
  • Understand and implement Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs)
  • Support cost control and demonstrate good financial awareness
  • Lead by example on site, providing guidance and mentoring to junior engineers
  • Adopt a forward‑thinking, problem‑solving approach to site challenges


Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a site engineering role
  • Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent qualification
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods and materials
  • Proven experience as a site‑based engineer on civils or infrastructure projects
  • Competent in the use of Leica Total Stations, GPS and surveying equipment
  • Good knowledge of AutoCAD; experience with Civil 3D and cut/fill (isopachyte) modelling advantageous
  • Strong man‑management and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead when required
  • Excellent problem‑solving, organisational and time‑management skills
  • Confident communicator with strong negotiation skills
  • High level of IT literacy, particularly in MS Office (Excel & Outlook)
  • Self‑motivated and able to work independently to tight timeframes


Certifications & Requirements

  • CSCS Card
  • SSSTS or SMSTS
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Right to Work in the UK
  • Clean Criminal Record required
