Lab Technician Trainee: Metallography & Mechanical Testing

We are forging the future today.About the Role Joining our Laboratory team, the Trainee Laboratory Technician will support the safe and efficient running of the lab while learning core skills across mechanical testing, metallography, microscopy, basic machining and sample preparation, and data entry into LIMS. This is an entry‐level position designed for someone with practical aptitude and attention to detail who wants to develop into a fully competent Laboratory Technician. You'll be supported, work to clear procedures and quality standards, and carry out tasks under supervision until signed off via the Mettis skills matrix.As a condition of employment successful candidates are required to satisfy ITAR (International Traffic In Arms Regulations) compliance and must fulfil the following before commencing this role:i. Currently hold the legal Right to Work in the UKii. Fulfil a DBS clearanceiii. Provide a consistent 5-year UK domicileiv. Pass Drugs & Alcohol screening at the start of their Mettis employmentResponsibilities Core Responsibilities Assist with preparation and labelling of mechanical and metallographic test specimens to defined standardsPerform laboratory testing (mechanical, metallographic, microscopy, chemical, hydrogen) once qualified via the skills matrixSupport metallographic preparation and basic microscopy observations with guidanceSupport routine release testing and first article testing activitiesPerform accurate data entry into LIMS and maintain traceable recordsMonitor consumables and stock levels and raise replenishment requestsMaintain good housekeeping (5S) and assist with equipment careFollow SOPs, work instructions and quality standardsSupport first article activities and documentationProvide general support to senior laboratory staffSafety Responsibilities Comply with all EHS and legislative requirementsFollow COSHH and safe handling proceduresParticipate in risk assessments and report hazardsFollow manual handling and equipment safety practicesQuality Responsibilities Deliver work to the highest standard with right‐first‐time focusRigorously follow lab procedures with accuracy and traceabilityMaintain clear, complete records to support auditsDelivery Responsibilities Complete tasks within required timeframes and to required technical specificationsEnsure timely completion of release testing and support on-time customer deliveryCost Responsibilities Support waste‐reduction and improvement initiativesHandle materials correctly to avoid damagePeople Responsibilities Maintain professional written and verbal communication with internal stakeholdersWork collaboratively with colleagues across the laboratoryComply with HR policiesBusiness Responsibilities Act as an ambassador for Mettis.Role model the company's Vision, Mission, and Values.Qualifications GCSEs including Maths, English, and Science (or equivalent)Degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Materials, or Science / relevant subject (or equivalent experience)Required Skills Methodical approach to tasksLearning agility and basic problem‐solvingAbility to plan and prioritize tasksEffective communication skills across all levelsIntegrity and professional conductUnderstanding of continuous improvement principlesDemonstrable practical aptitudeAbility to follow detailed proceduresIT literacy including Microsoft OfficeWillingness to learn and work safelyExperience in a lab or testing environmentFamiliarity with hand tools or sample preparation equipmentKnowledge of mechanical testing techniques (tensile, impact, fracture toughness, bend)Experience operating lathes, milling machines, CNC equipment, or metallographic preparation toolsExposure to LIMS or production systemsJob Type: Full-time, PermanentLocation: Redditch, WorcestershirePension: 3% Employer & 5% Employee contributionEmployee benefits and wellbeing platform (Perkbox)Free on-site parkingCycle to work schemeCompany eventsEmployee referral programmeSick pay (after probationary period)This job description is not exhaustive and may be reviewed periodically in agreement with the job holder.
