Communications Intern in London

We're looking to recruit a Communications Intern for the 2018-19 academic year. The successful candidate will develop their skills in written and oral communication; organisation and time management; IT and digital skills; the ability to work independently with relatively little supervision. Moreover, the successful candidate will develop a strong foundation in the field of overseas development.

What are you going to do:

This is an exciting opportunity for a student who'd like to use his/her communications skills for a great cause. Bread and Water for Africa UK's mission is to promote positive change in Africa by supporting and strengthening grassroots initiatives for community self-sufficiency, health and education.

We are a small team based in London and working hand in hand with our partner organisations in Africa, including in Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe. We don't tell them what to do, but we ask them what they need and provide them with financial and technical resources they need to make their life-saving work more effective. Our values are of humility, solidarity and respect.

As we continue to develop our digital marketing strategy, we are looking for a motivated and knowledgeable intern to help us with our website, donor relations, social media and e-Newsletter, working directly with our CEO. Day-to-day tasks include:

  • Write articles and updates for our website, based on information and reports received from our partners in Africa;
  • Help maintain our archive of reports, stories and photos from the field up to date and organised;
  • Create written, photo and video content;
  • Recruit and engage donors and supporters on and off line; manage donors stewardship plan; keep database up-to-date;
  • Create social media plan and schedule; create social media posts and manage rhythm and engagement;
  • Conduct campaigns to expand our outreach using marketing tools and ads, including Google grants, Facebook ads, etc.
  • Increase traffic to our website and sign-ups to our newsletter;
  • Create and manage our monthly e-Newsletter and track engagement;
  • Communicate directly with our programme partners in Africa to ensure information and data is collected and reports and applications are complete;
  • Take full ownership of other fundraising and communications projects, such as a cycle challenge in Africa, our upcoming community fundraising activity based on the theme of food and sharing, our online shop selling products made by our beneficiaries in Africa, and corporate partnerships.

What we ask:

  • You should be registered as a university student
  • This is a student work placement. You need to be a current student looking for a placement as part of your university degree.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills;
  • Self-sufficiency; able to work with minimum supervision, creative, adaptable and open-minded
  • Experience and knowledge of social media marketing a plus
  • Knowledge of SEO and website design and management a plus
  • A strong commitment to our values of working hand in hand with our partners in Africa to reduce poverty
  • Impeccable writing and communications skills in English
  • Other languages, including French and/or Swahili, a bonus
