Apprentice Carpenter - Start Your Career with BD Group!

BD Group is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Apprentice Carpenter to join our Property Services team. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience working alongside skilled tradespeople while completing a Carpentry & Joinery Level 2 Apprenticeship. As an Apprentice Carpenter, you will develop practical skills, learn industry best practices, and contribute to the delivery of high-quality repairs and maintenance services across the Borough. This role is ideal for someone who is eager to learn, enjoys practical work and is committed to building a career in the construction and property maintenance sector.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work alongside experienced carpenters, supporting the installation, maintenance and repair of structures, fixtures and fittings.
  • Assist in carrying out carpentry and joinery tasks within residents' homes and Council properties.
  • Provide excellent customer service and treat all residents, including vulnerable tenants, with professionalism and respect.
  • Attend apprenticeship training, toolbox talks and development sessions as required.
  • Learn and apply industry standards, techniques and safe working practices.
  • Support the collection, transportation and organisation of tools, equipment and materials.
  • Complete assigned work to a high standard under the guidance of qualified tradespeople.
  • Accurately complete timesheets and any required administrative documentation.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment.
  • Follow all Health & Safety policies, procedures and regulations at all times.
  • Support emergency, priority and reactive works when required.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude towards learning and continuous professional development.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience
  • GCSE qualifications or equivalent.
  • A genuine interest in carpentry, construction or property maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge of carpentry tasks, tools and materials is desirable.
  • Awareness of the importance of maintaining a safe and clean working environment.
  • Understanding of the importance of Health & Safety within the workplace.
  • Previous practical experience, work experience or hobbies related to carpentry would be advantageous.
  • Experience working within a team environment is desirable.
  • Commitment to undertake and successfully complete the Carpentry & Joinery Level 2 Apprenticeship.
  • Ability to meet apprenticeship course entry requirements, including Maths and English assessments where applicable.

  • Motivated and eager to learn new skills.
  • Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills and a professional approach when dealing with residents and colleagues.
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to take instruction from experienced tradespeople.
  • Physical stamina and manual dexterity to undertake practical carpentry tasks.
  • Basic problem-solving skills and willingness to learn practical solutions.
  • Good attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to complete records, timesheets and administrative tasks accurately and on time.
  • Positive attitude towards customer service and resident care.

  • Working pattern: Full-time Apprenticeship
  • Reporting to: Service Delivery Manager
  • Training: Carpentry & Joinery Level 2 Apprenticeship
  • Location: London Borough of Barking & Dagenham
  • Working across residents' homes, Council properties and operational sites as required
