Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will work within a multi-disciplinary team alongside occupational therapists, creative therapists, prison officers and psychotherapists.

The service utilises a relational approach and a flexible, person-centred model to meet the needs of individual service users. As a psychology graduate intern in the team, you will be given opportunities to support a range of activities available, e.g.: psychological groups, officer-led groups, psychological assessments, formulations and service evaluations. Due to the varying nature of the service and group timetables, and the short-term nature of this role, we cannot state exactly what you may be able to get involved with. However, to give an idea of therapies you may be able to support or learn about, psychological therapies offered within the service include EMDR, Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Narrative therapy (Tree of Life), Mentalisation Based Treatment and creative therapies.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

• 2:2 or above Undergraduate Psychology degree from an institution allowing for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society
• Grades C and above in English & Maths at GCSE
• Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society

Experience

Essential criteria

• Demonstrates high standards in written communication (evidenced by appropriate syntax and grammar)

Desirable criteria

• If applicable to the university course attended, had chosen Clinical/Counselling/Forensic Psychology module during undergraduate degree
• Experience of working with people with mental health problems and/or other disabilities

Other

Essential criteria

• In supporting statement highlights that they are a graduate from an ethnic or cultural minority, are socio-economically disadvantaged or who have caring responsibilities

Security Vetting

Essential criteria

• The application includes evidence of the required years of UK residency to meet prison vetting standards

• To positively interact with people presenting with psychological distress.
• To be able to work compassionately with people who have caused harm to others..

• Good communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be emotive.
• Ability to communicate sensitive information e.g., to service users, carers and colleagues.
• An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to a mental health context

Desirable criteria

• Skills in excel for data collection

Knowledge

Essential criteria

• An understanding of some of the needs and difficulties of people with complex mental health problems or cognitive issues
• An understanding of psychology applied to health care
