Job description
European Long/Short Equity Analyst
The Firm
We are working with a highly regarded single-manager hedge fund with a 15+ year track record and $1bn+ AUM. The firm has a strong reputation for deep fundamental research, and a medium-term investment horizon.
The strategy is not market neutral or short-term trading focused. The team seeks to identify meaningful mispricings where market expectations differ from the likely direction or rate of change in a company's fundamentals.
The portfolio combines a quality bias on the long side with alpha shorts, including both cyclical and structural opportunities.
The Role
The fund is looking to hire an experienced European Long/Short Equity Analyst to join its investment team.
The successful candidate will be a fundamental investor with a strong track record of generating differentiated ideas across European equities. The team operates with a generalist approach, while allowing analysts to develop sector tilts.
Responsibilities will include originating and developing long and short ideas (~3-4 per month), conducting deep fundamental research and working closely with the portfolio managers to build high-conviction positions.
Key Responsibilities
- Research European companies across sectors and market capitalisations - $1bn+ MC.
- Identify where consensus expectations are misaligned with the direction or rate of change in fundamentals.
- Build detailed investment theses covering earnings, cash flows, competitive positioning, management, industry dynamics and valuation.
- Assess what is already priced into a stock and where market expectations may be wrong.
- Engage with management, industry participants and other sources to develop differentiated insights.
- Monitor 10-15 positions and communicate investment theses clearly to the portfolio manager and wider team.
Candidate Profile
- 5+ years of relevant investment experience, ideally in long/short European equity or a similar environment.
- Demonstrable long/short investing experience, ideally including the generation of actionable short ideas.
- Strong financial modelling and valuation skills.
- Intellectual curiosity and the ability to understand businesses and industries deeply.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate investment ideas clearly.
- A medium-term investment mindset, rather than a focus on quarterly earnings or short-term catalysts.
