Semiotics Assistant

This is an excellent opportunity to be involved in an unusual and interesting application of academic thought to commercial problems, develop important skills, and increase your understanding of consumer and popular culture.

Job description

I am a brand semiotician. I use semiotic insights to create strategies to help brands grow. Semiotics is a powerful tool to diagnose problems with brands, create differentiation from competitors, and identify emergent cultural meanings to drive future equity.

I am looking for a bright, organised, diligent, analytical and motivated individual with a strong background in the arts and humanities or social sciences to assist me part-time with my work. The primary part of your role will be to help me compile a semiotics database of brand communications and trends. However, there will also be opportunities to help me ad hoc with projects. You will work remotely on a freelancer's contract and the hours are flexible. Thus, the role can easily be fitted around study

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. The key part of the role will be to help compile a database of material useful for semiotics analysis. Primarily, this will be brand communications like advertising in various formats, packaging and shopper marketing. You will:

a. Research and identify brand communications materials via the internet, publications and through 'safaris' in London. You will be directed by me but must also be prepared to identify sources of data.

b. Photograph such material, or capture images from the internet

c. Log such material using a remotely-accessible database. Records involve a variety of data, including photographs/scans, brand information and tags.

d. Be responsible for maintaining the integrity of the database. Records must be correct and full.

e. Provide critique of data collection to aid the development of the database

2. Assist me ad hoc with semiotics projects through garnering insights from the database and/or conducting original research on particular topics:

a. As required, run queries on the database and write reports on the findings with your own analysis.

b. As required, conduct original research on particular topics, either on the internet or 'safaris' in London (e.g. to retail environments).

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

  • Very strong academic record in the arts and humanities OR social studies. You should either have at least a bachelor's degree in these areas, or be studying one and have a proven track record of attainment.
  • Strong analytical skills particularly vis-à-vis visual culture
  • Highly motivated, responsive and able to work alone and organise your time.
  • Excellent attention to detail – good data entry skills
  • Strong written English
  • Familiarity with UK consumer culture
  • Ability to work remotely, but central London should also be accessible for meetings and safaris

  • EMPLOYMENT BASIS
  • You will work as a freelancer. You will submit timesheets at the end of each week.
  • It is anticipated that database work will involve 7-8 hours a week. These hours will be flexible and can be fitted around your other responsibilities. However, at the beginning of the role, it is likely that the role will involve more than 7-8 hours a week as the database will require intensive population. Time spent on ad hoc queries will, of course, depend on the scope of the project, and be in addition to the 7-8 hours a week.

    REMUNERATION
£10 per hour for part 1 of the responsibilities. Slightly more for part 2 – amount TBC.

    APPLYING
    Please send:

  • Covering note explaining why you are interested in the role and what makes you suitable.
  • A curriculum vitae
  • A sample of your academic work and/or other form of relevant prose, such as a blog entry. (You could attach this to the CV or include in the covering note).
